AA/A 170 - Making Wrestling Great Again!!!!!

Postby Bearhugger » Sat Jan 06, 2018 1:35 am

In AA/A, the 170lbs weight class is goooooooooooooooooood and the competition is TIGHT!!!!!

Here is what I know:

Patterson/Greenbrier West defeated Moore/Wirt today 2-0.
Last week, Patterson defeated Williams/Braxton 4-3.
Moore has defeated Devaney/Nitro twice. Once 2-0 and once 3-0(I heard).
Kotsko/East Fairmont defeated Lawson/Independence 11-2.
Thompson/Berkeley Springs looks solid.

We should see Patterson, Moore, Devaney, Kotsko and Lawson all at the WSAZ.

To add to the WSAZ mix, Casto/St. Albans(AAA 5th state place winner and 2017 Powerade 5th place winner) should be there. He defeated Patterson by 1 point this season. Lawson defeated Casto last season at the WSAZ.
Holy smokes. Braxton Amos works out with a landmine now!!!!!!

Saw Casto at Powerade and he looked very good against some very tough opposition. He has excellent instincts, balance, and a feel to keep in the right position. He should add some more interest to those you saw today.

I had a front row seat to the Patterson GWest) vs Moore (Wirt) match. It was a great one. I did think that Moore should have been awarded a takedown as his feet were in bounds. For some reason he wasn't. But, both wrestlers are very accomplished and could go either way. I'd be surprised if one of them are not at 160 before the end of the season.

It is anybody's ball game. The scores are too close and the season is still too early.

Kotsko also defeated Delaney at Mount Mat Madness in Baltimore from the brackets listed on flowrestling.

Daugherty of Keyser is another name for this collection of grapplers. The Winner's Choice should bring a few of these guys together for a reunion.

Watched some of these names grow through the years when I took my kid around the State and he had the opportunity to wrestle a few. Good, solid kids and I hope they continue to tear it up.

It is getting later in the year so the time to drop a weight class is limited and maybe already eliminated depending upon alpha date. Do any of these wrestlers look for greener pastures by going up in weight? 182 is tough but give me Patterson kotsco Lawson moore or Willilams jumping to 195 or even 220 and I would take just about any of these 170s against the ones that I have seen at 195 or 220. For some of them it is their last chance to win a state title. Chinese buffet and protein powder for the boys. Popcorn to watch great wrestling for the rest of us.

Good News:
1. All of the top 170s in AA/A are spread out very well based on regions. We do not have 5 or 6 of these guys piled in the same region.
2. This is going to be a fun weight class to watch starting with the state quarter finals.
3. Nobody seems to be taking command yet as THE MAN TO BEAT.

Bad News:
1. This weight class is going to be a battle in the states blood round. There will be a good one or two left behind.
2. 182 and 195 is not a greener pasture for any of these 170s. If you cannot win 170, then you probably can't win 182. 195??? Forget it.
3. 160 has a returning 2x state champion. Two top 160s recently dropped to 152. 160 is an easier place to be than 170 to make the podium.

Other News:
1. 113 is the same kind of weight class.

Who is at 195 that you would favor over the top 5 or 6 170's?

I like the AA/A 170s. However, if ONE is not so dominant to stand out in my mind as "The Man" at 170, then none are going to move up and win 182.

182 has a smaller pack of guys, say 3-4.

Frampton of Nitro looked dominant at the Winner's Choice. However, he has not wrestled Daniels of Independence or Cook of Madonna yet.

Don't forget Shayden Daugherty from Keyser. He pinned Jenkins from Moorefield, has a 11-2 win over Lawson and I think has a win over Kotsko as well.

Daugherty was not forgotten. Scroll above for comments made before the Winner's Choice.

Daugherty has not wrestled Lawson. It was Kotsko/East Fairmont that defeated Lawson 11-2.

To add to the competition of this weight class, Kotsko lost to Pine/Washington 3-1 at the Winner's Choice. He then got pinned by Daugherty, but was ahead when it happened.

For the readers, Williams of Braxton lost in SV1 to Patterson/Greenbrier West at the Braxton Invitational.
