Forfeits in HS Wrestling

Postby Truesouthfaninhunt » Mon Dec 12, 2016 3:05 pm

As you look at the results, the number of teams forfeiting a majority of weight classes is troubling. There are multiple duals listed in which only two or three actual matches took place and the remainder were either forfeits or double forfeits.
Do we have too many weight classes, not enough interest or both? Is it a reflection of the changing demographics of our state? Whatever the reasons it obviously doesnt bode well for the future of wrestling.

Don't forget, some schools just finished football, and some wrestlers may not have their 14 practices in until this week.

I wouldn't say we have too many weight classes simply because the last thing we need is a kid who barely misses making 152 stepping on the mat with someone who is 170 because we eliminated 160. What we need is non-wrestling coaches and school administrators who promote the sport more. Ever heard of a football coach who told his football players that they couldn't wrestle? We all have. Ever seen a pep rally for a wrestling tournament? Not many of us have. Fix that and wrestling will be much, much better in our state.

I do not understand any football coach who would not want wrestlers on his team. You hear this a lot. Give me 4 Def. lineman that are accomplished wrestlers any day. also linebackers, leverage again to get off blocks.....footwork, leverage, etc. A wrestler brings a lot to any football team.

A lot of you D linemen in college today are accomplished wrestlers. WVU has 2 or 3 of them and just recruited another......I think all 4 where HS state Champions in their state.
