2016 OHIO TofC & National Club/Team Championships

Registration is now open for the Ohio Tournament of Champions, (www.ohiotofc.com), to be held April 23, 2016, at the Columbus Convention Center, in Downtown Columbus, OH. Recently named one of the BIG 3 Youth Wrestling Tournaments in the USA (along with Tulsa and USA Folkstyle Nationals), the TofC is now in its 24th year.

As in the past, the TofC will continue to offer FREE Spectator Admission and no fees for Matside Coaches. Entry fee remains the same as it has, and we will continue to give a family discount for additional wrestlers. We will also again have extra mats, to allow those going two and out to wrestle additional matches at no fee.

The 2016 event will usher in a few new changes, with the MAJOR one being the National Club & Team Championships. The other is our brand new website, which we hope will make registering a lot smoother and also create less hassle in changing weight and printing out weigh in cards.

While the Registration part of things is up and running, we are still working on fixing a few bugs to the site, caused by the new site and also the move to a new server. Hopefully all the links, as well as the list of past results, will be up by mid December.

But, for those wondering about the talent level, 27 of this past year’s NCAA Division I All Americans were former TofC participants, highlighted by 4X NCAA Champion Logan Stieber, who won the TofC 6 times. The Ohio TofC is also the event were Kyle Dake (4x Tofc placer and 1X champ) and David Taylor (2X champ) first faced each other.

TEAM & CLUB COMPETITION

The major addition to the event is the Team & Club Competition. While still an Individual Event, wrestlers will be able to represent a team or club, which will be divided into four categories, based on type and size. Based on their individual place finish, wrestlers will then score points and the top three clubs/teams in each division will win major prizes.

Basically, this is how it will work. A Coach (or Team Designee) will go to our site (www.ohiotofc.com) and sign up his Team/Club. There will be a fee to register as a Club or Team, ranging from $40-100, depending on the club/team category. Coaches who sign their club/team up by February 1, 2016, will receive a 50% discount on this fee. Note: Team members do not have to sign up by this date. It only applies to the Coach (or Team Designee) in signing up the Club/Team account.

Once registered, the Coach/Designee will be given a code. This individual can then proceed to enroll each of the athletes to his roster, or provide his wrestlers with the code, for when they sign up. The Coach will also have the ability to easily send out an e-mail, to all his wrestlers and parents, with this code in it.

As the wrestlers enroll, they will select their Club/Team, during the registration process. If their Coach has yet to set up his account, wrestlers will be able to log back in, once the account has been set up, to indicate their selection. Coaches (or the Team Designee) will also be able to monitor who has signed up, paid and what weight class they are at.

While the family discount for wrestlers is still in effect, if one individual enrolls all the individuals for their club/team, AND pays for them in one payment, then they will also receive one additional FREE entry for each 10 paid individuals (a $70 savings).

Open Division wrestlers (those who are no longer in High School), will count towards the total number of wrestlers, but the Open Division will not earn points towards the Club/Team Competition.

Coaches will NOT have to designate their point scorers. The top X number of place finishers (see below) will score points for their club/team. Point scorers can be spread throughout all 90 of the age/weight categories.

Head Coaches of all registered Clubs/Teams will receive a special gift (one per club/team)

The Divisions and maximum amount of point scorers are as follows:

Division IV - Small School Team (maximum of 8 point scorers): all wrestlers must be from the same school district. This Division requires a $40 Team Registration Fee (discounted to $20 until February 1, 2016).

Division III - Large School Team (maximum of 15 point scorers): all wrestlers must be from the same school district. This Division requires a $60 Team Registration Fee (discounted to $30 until February 1, 2016).

Division II - Small Club Team (maximum of 22 point scorers): all wrestlers must be active members of that club, or from a localized area. This Division requires an $80 Team Registration Fee (discounted to $40 until February 1, 2016).

Division I - Large Club Division (maximum 30 point scorers): all wrestlers must be active members of that club, or from a 50 mile radius. *This Division may include State Teams from those states who are deemed to be of sufficient distance, in order to warrant their inclusion in this category. Based on location and past TofC participation, the following states would not be eligible for State Competition category, if it is used: OH, PA, MI, NY, NJ, IN, WV, MA, GA, TN, IL, MO and VA. This Division requires a $100 Team Registration Fee (discounted to $50 until February 1, 2016).

*The Tournament reserves the right to add a Division I-A, which would cover State Teams, but would not be applicable to the above mentioned states. Wrestlers from the states listed above need to fit into one of the other Divisions.

There should also be NO need for any club/team, in Division I-IV  to try to "recruit" wrestlers who are not from their school district, or active participants of their club (active means practicing with the club on a regular basis and does not refer to having represented the team at events) as coaches have 90 age/weight categories to draw their wrestlers from.

Clubs/Teams found to be in violation of "recruiting" outside wrestlers will not be eligible for the Club/Team awards. Wrestlers may represent, and earn points, for one team/club only.

CLUB & TEAM AWARDS
Note: We are working at adding even more possible awards to the ones listed below. Only one of each type of award will be given in each Division. The First Place team will select their award, then the second and then the third.

Points will be earned as follows:
1st Place: 20 points
2nd Place: 16 points
3rd Place: 12 points
4th Place: 9 points
5th Place: 7 points
6th Place: 5 points
7th Place: 3 points
8th Place: 1 point

In the event of a tie, the club/team with the most 1st placer finishers will take first. If still tied, then we will go to most 2nd place finishers and so on. If they are still tied after going thru all the places, the team that entered the most wrestlers will receive the first place award. If still tied, then duplicate awards will be given.

FLO WRESTLING
We will again be working with Flo Wrestling and hope that we will be able to run the event thru their Flo Pro scoring system this year. Basically, this would mean that we would run the event paperless, with all matside scoreboards feeding results to the Head Table. Weight classes would still be assigned to certain mats though and each mat would have their bouts numbered consecutively, as we have done in the past.

TOURNAMENT FLOW
As we have done the past two years, we will stagger the start of the weights on each mat. Basically, we will run one (sometimes two) weights on a mat, until they reach a point that they need rest time. We will then bring in the next weight class and start them. Once the first weight has received ample rest time, we will wrestle them again and so forth. Unfortunately, for the final weight classes, there is no additional weight class to bring in. However, we have added a mandatory 15 rest time between matches, beginning with our 2016 event.

Running the mats this way also eases the congestion at the awards area, as the past two years have shown.
