Any updates with Cottrell WVU, Arthur Neb, Haught VT, Smith WVU, Diehl Maryland this season?
Re: Home State All Americans
Cottrell and Smith are off to good starts at WVU. Have not seen results for the others. Check out WVU's wrestling results for specific results regarding WVU wrestlers.
Re: Home State All Americans
Diehl is now at Maryland after two years at Liberty. He has a full 4 year eligibility. He is behind Bannister, one of their best guys.
Re: Home State All Americans
Arthur would be starting at 149 right now for the Mountaineers if he had chosen WVU vs Nebraska when he transferred out of Clarion. I know he talked to WVU, but the cornfields were greener in Nebraska.
I don't live in the state anymore. Is Coach Henson doing well with WVa prospects? For a small state, so many went away...in the 1990's : Easters, Samples, Mitch Smith was also D1 caliber, but did WL. I know it is the whole package decision, but with cheap in state tuition, a real Big 12 conference, a new 3 mat wrestling pavilion, a new coach and staff, the best WVa D1 caliber kids need to be heavily recruited.

Re: Home State All Americans
Correct me if I'm wrong, Mitch Smith, I think, started out at Hofstra-D1 for a couple of years. Did well, then came to WL. Is my memory wrong?
Re: Home State All Americans
WVU has 5 WV's on their roster. Let the bull build his team. I don't know, but I can't help but think if he sees a D1 prospect from WV he'll be after them. Do you miss some? Sure you do. At this point, he really seems to be turning things around.
Re: Home State All Americans
Why is Sam Kline on this list? He wrestled in High School in Massachusetts.
Re: Home State All Americans
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he spent significant amount of time in and may be from Elkins. Anyone have more details? Yes he went to HS in Mass.
Re: Home State All Americans
dunbar76,
What's done is done... yes there are a few D1 kids who went elsewhere.
Henson's program is a legit performer now and will improve. I can't imagine him not giving kids a serious offer. It has to also be a good match for the kid, who if he is AA material, will have other offers.
Wva has many good wrestlers. However, to compete and win at D1 requires a youth and HS system that is rare in the state. It requires college trained alumni investing the time in the talent, and it requires some good genes and brain to develop it. (grades, talent, skill, motivation)
I predict Jake Smith is our next AA, followed by Cottrell.

Hope you are correct.
Re: Home State All Americans
Justin Arthur is taking a Red Shirt year in Nebraska. Currently the Huskers are #5 in the country with all starters ranked in the top 20. Not only does the room have Jordan Burroughs but now world team member James Greene.
Justin will have 2 years of eligibility left.
We think the world of WVU Wrestling, Coach Henson is incredible and nothing but a blessing for our state.
Justins younger brother attends WVU RTC as often as possible. I would be very happy to see him not only be Bull Trained but sporting the blue and Gold..

Of course the world is bigger than WVU wrestling. WVU couldn't land Arthur or Chertow - two Huntington boys with highly successful careers.
Nebraska has an incredible program and look very tough this year. Cudos and best to Justin. I did not follow his brother, so I can't comment if "trying" out at a D1 program is a long shot or practical option for him. The casual wrestler will be highly challenged at a competitive D1 program. Some guys are happy to just be on the team, stay in shape and be a part of it. I'm afraid those days are becoming less of an option with title 9 and a D1 schedule.
Anyway, this is all fan-banter, to want to see the best in a small state make it big and be able to watch/cheer them on. It's not the same on Flo.
I am super pleased to see so many real college programs in the state. It was WVU and WL back in the day. That's really cool IMO.

Re: Home State All Americans
Yes, several programs now after down to 2 for many years. This is a great thing. Sad that Marshall does not have one.
