BIG12 Tournament

Postby Jon Perkins » Wed Mar 06, 2024 10:40 am

The conference tournaments are this weekend and Wooo Boy some of the mountaineers are going to have some rough rows to hoe.
125: Jett is a 7 seed and I think if he is on he can make the finals
133: Hopefully we can qualify this weight...next year
141: Titus has had a good year but will be in for a dog fight all day
149: Watters should avenge his lose to McDougald from Oklahoma and make the finals
157: Dowling has a legitimate shot of qualifying but needs to be spot on all day
165: Hall is going to be in some barn burners, Don't miss any match at this weight
174: Conley has a legitimate shot of qualifying but needs to be spot on all day
184: Robin has wrestled really good at times this year and this weekend needs to be one of those times
197 & HWT: Cooley and Wolfgram will need to wrestle better than they have all year to make it through

I think legitimately WVU automatically qualify: Jett, Titus, Watters, and Hall with Dowling and Conley on the bubble. The others are probably going to have to rely on an At-large bid.

Those are good picks.

I think that Strick, Titus, Watters, Hall, Conley get AQ bids.

I think Dowling has to beat at least 2-3 better guys to make it and he has not shown ability to win the big ones yet.
I predict Conley wins a revenge match against Simma and gets an AQ at 174
Only 5 spots at 184, gonna be too tough for Robin
Too many good guys to beat for Conley and Wolfgram.
Hope I am wrong on these guys

Jett, Watters, Hall, and Conley are qualified. Titus and Wolgram need to win 1 more to get autos. Watters going for a championship! Conley's face is demolished

The team has taken a clear jump this year. Years past most of the podium finishers were finishing in 7th and 8th place. This year WVU will have one finalist and five others placing in the top 6, and scoring more points than they have ever scored, no matter how you slice it that is a good improvement. After yesterday I believe it is clear that the 133 weight has been solved for next year. Jett is too big for 125, he can make the weight but his conditioning takes a toll to be able to get there.

Jett takes 3rd
Titus medical forfeits to 6th
Watters in the championship tonight
Hall takes 4th
Conley takes 5th and gets the auto bid
Robin takes 7th, at large bid is probably not in the cards
Wolfgram takes 6th and will need an at large bid

Titus needs an at large bid now, anyone see what happened in his Edmund match? Concussion? Hopefully he gets an at large he deserves one

With Titus being a top 10/15 wrestler an at large bid is a no brainer

There are only 5 at large bids at 141, I have not looked closely at the other conference tournaments but it is doubtful that there were that many top 10 wrestlers who did not qualify in their conference tourneys. I would guess he is safe for an at large but the concern is the nature of his injury

The only 141 ranked higher than Titus that did not AQ was Cornella so Titus should get in for sure. Now let’s hope he’s healthy.

In his match with Edmond, they banged heads on a takedown attempt. Titus was able to get into a tie up until the ref blew the whistle for a stalemate, and on his way back to center of the mat he was stumbling and staggering pretty good. After a few minutes and concussion tests they wouldn't allow him to continue. He should be healed up and ready to go for NCAA's.

Titus gets the at large as expected but he is the only Mountaineer to do so. Robins is the 1st alternate which is a crock of you know what.

Can't understand how Hopkins or Anderson gets in over Robin's. My only guess is that they wanted to let some in from smaller schools. Robin is higher ranked and has a better RPI.
