WVU vs Fairmont State

Postby Bearhugger » Sun Dec 04, 2022 12:59 pm

WVU rebounds from a Big 12 set back against Missouri when they host D2 Fairmont State on December 19th.

What are your predictions?

Since Fairmont State lost on Saturday to D-2 Pitt-Johnstown 48-0 and to D-2 Lake Erie 48-3, I’ll predict a victory.

But a better question is, what are we doing wrestling Fairmont State?

As a WV wrestling promotion, I like it. Anything less than a shutout though will be a disappointment.

If any 133s from Glenville, Fairmont or Marshall University enter the transfer portal, I hope WVU is watching.

Very proud of the way both WVU and FSU wrestled last night. It was a great experience for kids to wrestle in the coliseum. It might have been “as expected” but it was a good night and kudos to FSU team for showing up and putting themselves out there against a D1 school! Although I’m pretty sure the 133 match was not “as expected”…. ;)

Keep in mind the last time wvu and fsu(formally fsc) wrestled , 1977, fsc kicked wvu’s butt. Local matches are great for fans and programs. I was at this match and fsu had about the same amount of fans that wvu had. Yes the 133 was not expected but that is why you wrestle. Sometimes someone just gets stuck. Keeps us all humble.

I saw the video of the 133 match. The Fairmont State wrestler hit a text book perfect cowboy or side headlock.

Interestingly enough, Coach Flynn made a video demonstrating all of the uses of the side headlock. It can probably be found on YouTube.

It is obvious to me, Fairmont State's 133 watched that video.

FSU just finished 3rd in the MEC. Not bad for a young program. Hoping they are building something nice there.

Why should “we keep in mind” a dual meet 50 years ago? Heck, WVU used to play nearby Washington & Jefferson College, too, and W&J once played in the Rose Bowl.

But those days are gone.

Nowadays, the WV state powerhouse in D-2 NCAA wrestling is BY FAR West Liberty State University. WVU should consider wrestling West Liberty if it wants an instate tuneup…that might not be another 9 match to 1 match blowout like the FSU match.

WVU’s schedule is tough as it is. Putting a young instate program like FSU and GSU is good for everyone. As for 50 years ago, fsc had a great program and lost it. I’m pulling for it to succeed. Like I said earlier, fsu’s attendance at this match was about equal to WVU. Also per history, maybe 50 years from now fsu would host a struggling WVU. Who knows."….
