Two Otterbein Cardinals win titles at Polar Bear Invitational

Postby CardyStyle » Mon Dec 05, 2016 9:33 am

DA, Ohio – The Otterbein wrestling program got back on the mat after a two-week Thanksgiving layoff Saturday afternoon, turning in some nice results at the Ohio Northern Polar Bear Invitational.

The Cardinals finished sixth out of 11 teams with 98.5 points and earned two individual championships from a pair of standout freshmen, with 157-pounder Willy Plaisir and 197-pounder Drew Kasper both going undefeated en route to titles in their respective weight classes.

Plaisir did not allow a match to go the distance the entire day by tallying a technical fall and three pins. He stamped the finishing touches on his division with a first-round pin in the championship contest over Dillon Steward of Adrian College.

Kasper was also impressive, going 4-0 himself and outlasting Heidelberg's Gage Finegan in overtime to capture the crown. Both he and Plaisir now hold 11-1 records on the season.

Otterbein, competing without a trio of starters in Jackson Lakso, Jake Vaughan and Donny Didion, still managed to secure some notable finishes from a handful of other Cards in the lineup.

Freshman Gage Archer (285 lbs.) went a solid 4-1 on the day, with four pins, en route to a fifth-place finish while classmates Corbin Bunsold (185 lbs.) and Tyler Norris (133 lbs.) both walked away in sixth place. Bunsold tallied all three of his victories by pin and now has a team-high nine on the season.

Additionally, freshmen Chris Martinez (197 lbs.) and Braden Neuberger (174 lbs.) both went 2-2 individually, with Martinez eventually going on to earn a seventh-place finish. Heidelberg won the team title with 166 points, 21 clear of second-place Tiffin University.

Otterbein will be back in action next weekend, traveling to Thiel College for a dual match Friday evening at 7 p.m. The team will then be off for a month before kicking off Ohio Athletic Conference play against Muskingum University.
