The new AAA Region 4 alignment has many of us waiting in anticipation. Much of the talk has been about good wrestlers possibly not making the state tournament due to the competition.
An alternative point of view is that if you are wrestling in region 4 and you qualify for the state tournament, then there is a high probability that you will have an easier match in the opening round. You could have an easy path to the semifinals.
We could have a few or many weight classes where all four region 4 qualifiers meet each other in the state tournament semifinals.
Region 3 and region 2 will have some tough individuals, but overall, those regions will be weak.

The new region 4 has the top 5 AAA returning state placing teams. Has that happened in region 1 in the past?

Forget about the past gentlemen. When I was a senior in high school, Ken Chertow was also a senior and I "heard" of Independence High School only because they had a finalist at the state tournament. Now Chertow has camps all over and Independence was last season's best state team (all classes).
Speaking of the past, any AAA state tournament team record that gets broken, it will be broken under fewer team conditions (weaker competition). As for any AA/A team records broken, it will be under tougher circumstances.
I also think this new AAA and AA/A classification will be changed again somehow. The high schools' football teams are increasing their travel to match up with teams that allow for enough points in the state rankings. The parents are going to get tired of this and it will become too costly.
It will be interesting to see who the top AA football teams will be this season. Will it be the teams that have been at the top of AA in the recent seasons or, will it be some teams that just dropped down from AAA?

OW88, I went back about 30 years and the only time Region 1 came close to doing that was 2003 when they had 5 of the top 6 teams. Next year will be brutal in Region 4. Bearhugger commented that there will be some top 8 ranked wrestlers in some weight classes staying home. I happen to agree.
But what the heck do I know...............

Don't worry in a few years they'll all change again........Plus, only 29 AAA programs. WOW
Re: AAA Region 4 - 2016/2017 Season
AAA is getting like the NBA. Many many kids percentage wise make the playoffs(tournament) . 29 programs, 16 qualifiers per weight class, well over 50%. Pretty good deal for a trip to the big dance......
