AAA Power Rankings
Re: AAA Power Rankings
OVAC tournament starting tonight will add some information as to how the top 3 stack up against one another in a tournament format. Should be interesting. However, it appears South and University are each without one of their starters

Re: AAA Power Rankings
Whereas the Power Rankings came out the same time the Coaches' individual polls came out, I am taking upon myself that ranked individuals made up the Power Rankings.
If this is correct, if a school didn't have at least one ranked wrestler, then that school would not be reflected in the Power Rankings.
I will add that Capital didn't have a team last season. I have not seen any evidence that they have a team this season either.
Another interesting observation is to compare the Power Rankings to this past weekend's results of the OVAC and Winner's Choice.
Let's not overlook Bear Tracks in any analysis.

Regarding Bearhugger's query 2 posts above, yes these are "power rankings" if you take the Jan 13 WVMAT coaches individual rankings and gave "state tournament " placement points to the eight individuals ranked.
Regarding AAcoach 16"s post highlighted above, yes the OVAC tournament gives some insight as to the order of team finish, but the points scored in the OVAC are not really "real time" for the projected/probable scores in the state tournament because the competitors involved are so drastically different than those in the state tournament.
An obvious disclaimer for the "points" awarded to each team using Brent's power ranking formula is that the actual team points will increase significantly with placement points awarded and more importantly bonus points awarded for pins, etc. that will occur at the tournament. It also does not take into account the 5, 6, or 7 points that a non placing wrestler can score for their team if they win a few matches by pin before losing twice.
Using the updated WVMAT coaches individual rankings from last week (new rankings are due out in two days) the power rankings are as follows for the top 7 teams from the coaches poll:
Wheeling Park : 96
South : 74
University : 73
Spring Mills : 70
Saint Albans : 59
Huntington : 54
Woodrow Wilson : 52
I think there are two main thoughts to take away from this information. First, Wheeling Park is a strong favorite in the team race, with University, South, and Spring Mills the top contenders for second (Both the OVAC and Brooke Classic are evidence of this). Second, the coaches ranking of team placement is slightly skewed with how teams have done head to head in duals as opposed to how they are more likely to finish in the state tournament, not that there is necessarily anything wrong with that.
Re: AAA Power Rankings

Wheeling Park - 96 points
South - 79 points

Spring Mills - 74 points
Saint Albans - 54 points
Woodrow Wilson - 50 points
