Re: State Tournament Health
This comment did not age well... Is all of Region 1 going into quarantine?
From WVNews.com:
Wrestling team has been instructed to quarantine after COVID-19 exposure.
Students from University, Wheeling Park, Buckhannon-Upshur, Bridgeport, John Marshall, Brooke, Preston and Morgantown high schools competed in the AAA Region I Championships on Saturday at John Marshall High School.
"It is involving several other counties from the regional meet on Saturday,"

Re: State Tournament Health
It is a sad day for the Bridgeport High School Wrestling Team. The sweat and tears that go into practice day in and day out, to show their talents on the mat come regionals and earning their way to States only to be told they are no longer able to compete. I remember back in 2017 when 3 weight classes were held at a separate time many days later due to a mat herpes outbreak that was traced back to regional competition. Surly the WVSSAC can make the same move in this situation by moving the dates of the AAA states to allow these hard working and deserving athletes the ability to compete. Surly this situation is not limited to Bridgeport wrestlers and could in fact involve many other wrestlers from other teams once contact tracing is completed.
Re: State Tournament Health
It’s been five days since the supposed exposure test them tomorrow then let them wrestle
This is ridiculous
Easily fixed by a simple test

Apparently Harrison county schools have an outbreak.
It has nothing to do with the regional tournament
Bridgeport sports teams have 300 kids currently quarantined
The article from WV news is wrong and misleading

Re: State Tournament Health
The word on the street is that the Bridgeport wrestling team has yet to be faced with any quarantine issues up till now. The word on the street is also that of all the students quarantined, not all are athletes and nearly not all are from Bridgeport. Furthermore, the word on the street is just because you are quarantined does not mean you have COVID. If quarantined wrestlers are able to weigh in at regionals and be allowed to forfeit matches and still compete at states, any athlete from any county in WV who is mandated to quarantine due to possible exposure should be able to take a COVID test, and if negative, be able to compete in their sport. In this case it is wrestling. There should be no fear in mandatory testing to compete.

It appears your statement is misleading. When you look up Harrison County Schools, there are 24 schools listed. When I read a news article posted from yesterday about the quarantines, it does not effect just athletes in the county nor does not involve only Bridgeport Schools.
Re: State Tournament Health
According to the article only Bridgeport is affected. The rest of the region is still a go. Here is a snippet of the article.
The following weight classes are affected: 120, 138, 145, 160, 170, 182, 195, and 285. All Region I wrestlers will be bumped up where applicable, and the AAA Region I 5th-place finisher in each weight class will now fill the "F1" position in the respective brackets.

Re: State Tournament Health
Stonewall, your statement is rather misleading. In an article posted yesterday, the student quarantines were from various schools in Harrison county, not nearly all from Bridgeport High School as you suggested. When I look up Harrison County Schools, there are actually 24 schools in the county, not just one.
Word on the street is Bridgeport High School Wrestling Team has not had any previous covid quarantine exposure issues until now. Also, word on the street is just this: just because you are mandated to quarantine due to possible covid exposure does not mean you actually have covid. So, if quarantined wrestlers due to possible covid exposure are able to weigh in at regionals, forfeit their matches after weigh-ins, and still place in the top 4 to have the opportunity to wrestle at states, Any athlete from any county in West Virginia who is on quarantine due to possible covid exposure she be given the opportunity to complete covid testing. If testing is negative, those athletes should also be allowed to participate in their sport; in this case it’s wrestling. There should be no fear in mandating testing for athletes if everyone is following the rules, right? The other option is to move AAA states like the WVSSAC did in 2017 for those 3 weight classes due to the mat herpes outbreak.

Re: State Tournament Health
Can anyone explain how if Bridgeport wrestlers are out how they didn’t expose the entire Region?

According to the article you referenced Bridgeport so far is the only one affected. According to the article referenced earlier (which came out after the article you're referencing), all of Region 1 is most likely affected. Just because Bridgeport came forward first does not mean they are the only ones.

Bridgeport is out because they were exposed at Regionals. Not the other way around

What a sad situation. Seemingly made worse by the all-to-predictable poor decision making of the WVSSAC.

I imagine from their perspective following the CDC and state guidelines is a wise decision. What if they ignored them and things went bad.

Re: State Tournament Health
I’ve never read CDC guidelines for weighing-in a wrestler that is out due to quarantine. Seems like the WVSSAC made a decision, then changed their mind.

Still very sad and poor decisions made by WCSSAC. The wrestler in question and his family did everything that was asked of them by WVSSAC and they still had to go to court because WVSSAC went back on their word. This isn't a one off scenario either. They are very consistent in being inconsistent.

Then lost the court case. Lol... He will be able to wrestle, as he should.

I was referring to not allowing those under quarantine to participate at the state tournament

So how is Region 1 able to compete at all if they were exposed at the Regional Tournament?

So if they have been placed in quarantine based on year old rules that haven't changed in a "fluid" situation. Rules that are stricter than even hospital policies and maybe even CDC recommendations. (I should look that up, but I'm tired). Should they be able to participate if they have tested negative?

If the policies in place allow them to participate obviously they should. If the policies in place do not allow them to, they should not. But in recent days we have learned that the enforcement of their own rules and policies seem “fluid”. So who knows what they will be saying by Monday.
