Re: 2020-21 AAA Preview, Ranking the Returners

Postby KDunbar » Mon Mar 16, 2020 6:20 pm

I used the previous format of awarding teams points equivalent to what their returning wrestlers scored this year (which obviously has its own flaws) since if one finishes below 6th place they have contributed only a small amount to their teams overall score. I came up with numbers I have listed below. I didn't add one point for state qualifiers, as has been done in the past (just because I didn't want to get that detailed). The above numbers are interesting but I believe it gives a disproportionate amount of weight to wrestlers who won't really be helping their team that much in the scoring awarded at the state.

South : 83 points
Wheeling Park : 73 points
Spring Mills : 38 points
University : 24 points
Buchanan : 24 points
Riverside : 22 points
GW : 22 points
Huntington : 21 points
and notably PHS : 0 points (not being negative here, just pointing out a startling fact)

Looks to be a 2 team race again and depending on who can get the returning parts into their lineup and what firepower they have coming in from the middle schools.

Is there one of these for A/AA?

On the "Front Page" there is a listing for both AAA & AA/A. As I said above, my numbers did not include 1 point for state qualifiers, as has been done traditionally over the years on the site.

My listing only had the top 8, but St. Albans has a shot at cracking the top 10 next year. I don't know who they have new coming onto their line-up for next year, but if their 7 individuals who qualified for the state tournament but didn't place can grow on that experience and add some team points next year that could move them into the top 10. I was surprised that Colton didn't place but the brackets probably weren't in his favor and I expect him to be up there on the podium next year.

SA will be great considering at least 2 freshman that are national champs moving up plus several more that have been in it since they were in the youth program.
Just a few names to know Moses Eads and Mathew Macafee.

What national championship did they win and when? What weight do you project them? Thank you for the heads up, excited to watch them.
