AA/A Bear Tracks - Week Ending Dec 16

Postby Bearhugger » Sun Dec 16, 2018 7:45 pm

AA/A BEAR TRACKS – DECEMBER 16, 2018

Important points:
1. Last season’s state place winners were given higher rankings to begin this season. Until they get defeated, they stay in the top five.
2. If you see two wrestlers for the same school listed under the same weight class, that is because they are both noteworthy and their final weight classes and status are not known. In addition, they have also placed in tournaments.
3. Some wrestlers have moved into the top five due to recent success in winning tournaments or still being undefeated despite not beating a previously ranked wrestler.
4. If a wrestler has yet to wrestle or is temporarily out, they have been dropped to the “Pack”.
5. Wrestlers who place in their respective tournaments will get entered into the Pack first. Others will follow in due time.
6. As always, turn in your scores, input, private messages, etc.
7. IF YOU SEE any discrepancies, then please advise and corrections will be made.
8. Thank you to all that have contributed from all forms of social media.

Thank you for the input. I also checked all scores for Sissonville and only found wins for Whittington. I have re-ranked.

AA/A 120 is shaping up to be a good weight class. I do expect one hammer to drop from 126. Also, there are a few tough kids at 120 that will more than likely go to 113.
Holy smokes. Braxton Amos works out with a landmine now!!!!!!

I will review this. Stoots was ranked to begin with due to his 6th place finish in the states last season. I also have some other input that will influence 152. This weight class will be reworked.

182 at Webster had some great matches this weekend:

Conley (Brax) pinned Mayle (PB), beat Perkins (Clay) 6-4, and lost to Stearns (LH) 8-2

Stearns (LH) beat Mayle 5-3 and Perkins 7-0

Perkins beat Mayle 2-1

Mayle can beat each of them

He does have one loss at 126. I'll have to check my records to see who that was against. I am still trying to get caught up on posting our results.

There are two Stoots from Liberty at 152. Davy lost to Testerman by injury Def on 12/1. I do not think he has wrestled since. His brother Billy has been wrestling at 152 the last two weekends I believe.

Just an honest question. If Raike at 126 beat a two time AAA state champion, do think he’s honestly the 4th best in AA. The match wasn’t even close at anytime.

Papajoe, what we have hear is, a failure to communicate. Everybody except YOU that is associated with Mr. Blake's wrestling season cannot or will not communicate.

I have gone through all of the scores. I can only find "Lewis County" mentioned twice. The first is when LC dualed Buck Up. Blake's name was not mentioned obviously because he didn't compete that night. The second time Lewis County was mentioned was when they competed at the Keyser Kiwanis. Only team names and scores were mentioned.

In summary, none of the readers would have known that Mr. Blake was on the mat until you came to bat for him. To take things further, I checked Lewis County's team page that is linked on WVMat through the regional map. The 2018/2019 schedule is not provided, thus I cannot get any kind of feel for who Lewis County has wrestled.

Thanks to you and only you, Mr. Blake has been added to the Pack quicker than many other wrestlers whose team doesn't post scores. If you wish, private message me the names and schools he has wrestled and I will re-rank him asap. Or, get Lewis County to get their scores posted and Mr. Blake should be able to wrestle his way out of the pack in a week. Two of the wrestlers ranked in the top 5 at 113 made it due to recent success in tournaments. This was known due to Trackwrestling, TWT and the scores section of WVMat.

I saw where Hedgesville posted many of their team scores and they went as far back as the beginning of the season. This is great!

For the readers, I check WVMat, Trackwrestling, TWT, Facebook (Team Pages) and I contact coaches, parents and wrestlers directly to obtain information. I am still making contacts and establishing routines.

Trackwrestling was not created for West Virginia wrestling. TWT was not created for West Virginia wrestling. Facebook was not created for West Virginia wrestling.

WVMat WAS created for West Virginia Wrestling. The wrestling community should use it.

Posting scores is just typing. Isn't there a team mom, a team dad, a team stats person or even a wrestler that can pitch in and submit these scores?

I agree with Papajoe, show some respect for the kids that get on the mat. They are becoming few and far between these days.

Also, Cruickshanks 160 of Clay beat Sammy Pullens (fayetteville) 8-2 (i think) to win the bracketed division. Casto of Clay beat Sturgis May (Braxton) to win the 220. Williams of Braxton (170) did not wrestle day 2 of the tourney. 195 had Will Kuhn (Lewis) beating Seth Meador (Braxton) in the finals. 285 was Quinn Meador as the winner. I did not catch the winners of the lower brackets.

Braxton won the duals part on Saturday.

These rankings started before the first match was wrestled this season. The first wrestlers to be ranked were simply ranked on how they placed in last season's state tournament. Freshmen, STQs and non-STQs were not ranked. They were all thrown in the pack.

To rank wrestlers, returning state champions were ranked first. Returning State place winners were filled in based on where they placed. Now after 3 weeks of competition, head to head has been shifting things around. I elected not to bump a wrestler out of the #1 spot if he hasn't been beat yet, within his own classification. Opinions could and should vary on this. Once WVMAT starts their rankings up, we can have two different rankings to provide contrast.

As wrestlers have wrestled, they get moved up in the rankings based on who they have beat. There have been some big wins where AAA has beaten AA/A or AA/A has beaten AAA. We need some big AAA vs AAA and AA/A vs AA/A matches to happen to shake these rankings up.

These rankings are not based on who I think is the best, nor are they necessarily who I might be rooting for. The wrestlers wrestle and based on the results, the rankings will change. Obtaining knowledge of the results is the challenge.

Some wrestlers will get a slower path to the top 1, 2 or 3 spots because of where they started (down in the pack) and who they have wrestled thus far. Their schedule might keep them from ever being ranked in the top 1,2 or 3.

Based on the announced Wheeling Park Duals' pools, Point Pleasant is in the same pool as Oak Glen. #4 Raike (Freshman) could and should meet up with #2 ranked Ray (6th in the state last season).

East Fairmont is suppose to be going to the Wheeling Park duals. According to the pools on the OVAeC wrestling page, EF is not assigned to a pool yet (SOMEBODY SHOULD CHECK INTO THIS). If Point and EF meet up, the #1 Flint (3rd in the state last season) should meet up with #2 Bartee (Freshman).

I came up with a process to keep my opinion (or the opinion of others) out of determining the rankings. I am letting the process play out.

Thank you to all who have provided contributions to these rankings through posting your scores, comments, private messages, etc.

170 Logan Allen (Philip Barbour) beat Wilson of Fayettteville in the finals. Not sure 3rd or 4th
160. Cruickshanks (Clay)1st, Pullens (Fayettteville)2nd
Tanner George (Philip Barbour)3rd, Gavin Triplett (Braxton)4th. Some great matches all weekend at 160.

Wilson (Fayetteville) beat Allen in the duals the day before I believe.

Heard some wrestlers and others talking about rankings last evening at University High, so the kids are paying attention to Bear’s rankings.

Get your scores in so your kids can get recognized for their hard work!

Mr Gator, I am also a firm believer in the rankings system and other than not having the last name (Hart/Warden/Snuffer/Adams/Bolen), gator is my favorite name in high school wrestling. “BUT” I’m with popajoe, and JW 100% on this one in believing these rankings are (for the most part) obserd. Hugger, we both know the deal. I could be politically correct as the President in a blue tie at a state of address speech, and my opinion on the matter would be deleted so I will keep it simple. Sam has and imo will always be as close as one can get (zero bias or influence) to being pretty spot on with his rankings. If it isn’t broken, why try to fix it?

How often are these Sam rankings put out?

Levi Brake is back and healthy for Nicholas Co. and is 20-1 @132. Looking to be in the top 5 or 6 this year.

Joseph Dudley @138 for Nicholas Co should be somewhere in the top 10. He tech faulted Nelson from Lincoln in the second period. He was ranked 9th last year but was injured at Regionals.

Has Vanmeter of Moorfield moved up to 182? Saw where he has been wrestling at 182 last several matches.

Looks like he weighed in and wrestled 170 that day. Probably just bumped up for a few matches to get a win instead of a forfeit, when the opposition didn't have a 170.

That's what I thought, then saw Moorfield had someone else wrestle at 170 that entire time.
